AI literacy is more than prompting

Students need the knowledge and judgment to decide when AI is useful, evaluate what it produces, protect information, explain their process, and remain accountable for the quality and meaning of their work.

Understand how inputs shape outputs

Prompting helps students see that outputs are constructed responses, not neutral answers. Context, framing, omissions, and assumptions all matter.

Verify before trusting

Students should check claims against credible sources, identify missing evidence, distinguish confidence from accuracy, and recognize fabricated details.

Examine bias and representation

Students can compare outputs, ask who or what is missing, trace stereotypes, and consider how training data and design choices influence results.

Disclose and defend choices

Transparent use means more than adding a citation. Students should document where AI entered the process and defend the reasoning they chose to keep.

Questions schools should resolve

Is AI literacy a separate course?

It can be introduced through dedicated lessons, but meaningful literacy develops when students apply shared routines across subjects, grade levels, and authentic tasks.

Should students cite AI?

Schools should define transparent-use expectations that fit the task. Students should at minimum disclose the tool, purpose, and meaningful contribution when AI shapes submitted work.

How does this relate to academic integrity?

Integrity improves when assignments define permitted support, require process evidence, and assess reasoning students must personally explain or demonstrate.
